In most cases, photographs are not acceptable as a substitute of formal utility drawings. The major patent offices around the world including that of USPTO, EPO, JPO etc. utility drawings to be submitted in black and white lien drawings with relevant numbering and labelling. However, in certain cases where it is impossible to draw & illustrate the invention such as complex biological specimen photograph is also permissible.
